Established by the Black Alumni/ae of MIT (BAMIT) in 1986, the Fund is named in honor of Dr. Ronald E. McNair '77, the NASA astronaut and MIT alumnus who lost his life in the space shuttle Challenger explosion on January 28, 1986. Dr. McNair's commitment to professional excellence and community service are qualities that the Fund recognizes and rewards in black MIT undergraduates.

Gift of alumni (ae) and friends to support the efforts of MIT students to engage their skills for the benefit of resource poor communities external to MIT and thus enhance students overall academic experience.

Gifts of alumni/ae and friends to support the Black Students Union. Funds support services and programs that give a sense of community and help to aid in the welfare of black students on and off campus.

Gifts of alumni/ae and friends to support the Black History Project.

Gifts of members of the Class of 2005 to establish an endowed undergraduate scholarship fund, with preference to support first generation college students.

Gifts from alumni/ae and friends to support large events that are put on collectively by the groups that represent the African Diaspora.

Gifts to support the community activities for graduate students/postdocs who are the first in the family to have pursued and graduated from a 4-year college and graduate students/postdocs who grew up in a low-income household, received a Pell grant, or whose parent contribution for undergraduate education was ≤ $5000.

To provide programs and services in support of Latino and Latina alumni, students, and prospective students of MIT.

Gifts to support the Latinx Graduate Student Association, which seeks to empower its members through the creation of a strong network of graduate students, faculty, administrators and alumni that will aid in the retention, graduation and professional support of the MIT latinx student.

Funds for programs and services that help to ensure a safe and supportive campus-wide community where lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender, questioning individuals, and their allies are all welcomed as equals.

Gifts of alumni/ae and friends to support the MIT Introduction to Technology, Engineering, and Science (MITES) office. MITES' mission is to diversify the science and engineering community by serving students from underrepresented and underserved backgrounds and empowering these students to develop the skills and confidence needed to pursue careers in technical fields.

Gifts to the fund will help provide critical support for programs and activities relative to undergraduate under represented minority groups at MIT.
