UPOP helped me gain business savvy and learn to think strategically, to know my role and see how I can add value in other places.

UPOP

Since the 2001-2002 academic year, UPOP (Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Program) has been giving MIT engineering sophomores an early taste of what it’s like to practice engineering in the real world.

The program includes —

  • practical experience through summer internships;
  • networking opportunities and access to a community of mentors who can help accelerate their careers; and
  • professional development training in areas like leadership, communication, and how to work in teams.

UPOP has quickly become so popular that, every year, it fills to capacity within 24 hours. And because it’s high-touch and labor-intensive, it is currently open only to a limited number of students each year.
