The Office of the Dean for Undergraduate Education is committed to sustaining and expanding programs that foster some combination of advising and mentoring, leadership development, and diversity.

Life and learning

Advising and mentoring, developing leadership skills, interacting with people of diverse backgrounds — these are all experiences that give MIT undergrads perspective, and that help them see potential connections between their academic pursuits and their future lives (so that they may prepare successfully for the latter).

In fact, it is thought that “life and learning” experiences such as these should be one of the distinguishing aspects of an MIT education. Financial support is required to sustain these activities, however, and to make them accessible to all students, regardless of financial situation.

As part of its commitment to enhancing the undergraduate educational commons, MIT has established these priorities for life and learning:

  • Support the advising and mentoring of MIT students through such avenues as UROP, faculty networks, and the MIT Careers Office;
  • help MIT students develop leadership skills through their experiences at the Institute; and
  • provide opportunities to foster and champion diversity withing the MIT community.
