| Martin Tang SM ’72 offered another $100,000 to benefit MIT students if MIT10 undergraduate alumni could meet his challenge this year: 3,500 donors by June 30, 2008. Also, Jerry Appelstein ’80 challenged MIT10 to “pick-up-the pace” offering a total of $50,000 to MIT on behalf of the top 3 classes to add the most donors by mid-May 2008. Both agreed to give MIT10 donors the power to collectively decide—via individual votes—where the money would be spent. |
| True, MIT10 did not meet the highest rung of Martin’s challenge, but they came in strong with 2,834 donors overall, achieving the second highest MIT10 participation rate in over a decade, and securing $25,000 of Martin’s funds. In addition, the Classes of 1998, 2006, and 2007 won top honors in Jerry’s race, securing between them $50,000 for MIT. |
| Voting among MIT10 donors showed an overwhelming preference for using Martin’s $25,000 to benefit scholarships. Voting among the 3 winning classes in Jerry’s race determined that his prize money would be allocated: $35,000 to scholarships and $15,000 to student life programs. |
