School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences
In the scientifically driven and technology-rich universe of MIT, a School devoted to the humanities, arts, and social sciences occupies a very special place.
That school is SHASS. Even as MIT produces some of the most exciting scientific and technological advances on the planet, SHASS provides a vital complement and counterpoint. We help students understand these transformations in their unique historical, social, and aesthetic contexts. We help students think through their personal responses to—and place within—a rapidly changing world. And just as important, we help them articulate those responses. SHASS, in fact, is the common denominator of the MIT student’s undergraduate education, providing a foundation of knowledge that enhances life-long learning in every field.
The School’s undergraduate and graduate students have access to a rich array of courses and an extraordinary faculty that includes two Nobel laureates and three Pulitzer Prize winners, as well as 38 American Academy of Arts and Sciences Fellows.
