In the early 1960s, John F.C. Turner and Horacio Caminos examined the role of the poor in building their own housing in developing countries. Their work led to a complete reassessment of national and international housing aid policies.

“Research Firsts from MIT”

Economics

For more than a century, the Department of Economics at MIT has been a leader in education, research, and public service—a commitment that has only increased in recent years. The department today is represented by a vibrant collection of students and faculty, including 33 full-time faculty members and seven faculty who hold joint appointments with other Schools. Economics’ distinguished scholars have received numerous awards, among them three Nobel Prizes.

The economics department recently launched a new center—the MIT Poverty Action Lab. In the fight against world poverty, the world knows surprisingly little about what policies work best. The objective of the MIT Poverty Action Lab is to set a new standard of rigorous evaluation that answers key policy questions using randomized trials, similar to those used in medicine. This approach provides transparent and scientifically sound answers. Anticipated improvements in evaluation research have the potential to dramatically enhance the policies that are used to alleviate poverty in many nations.

In addition to seeking support for the core activities of this exciting new initiative, the department also needs to …

  • increase graduate fellowship resources, so as to remain competitive with other top schools by bringing the very best minds to MIT; and

  • increase faculty support through the establishment of professorships.
