A Smoot is a five-foot-seven-inch unit of measure named after MIT economics grad Oliver Smoot Jr. ’62 . You will find Smoot markings along the Harvard Bridge sidewalk, which, legend has it, measures precisely 364.4 Smoots and an ear.

Comparative Media Studies

Comparative Media Studies (CMS) offers a two-year, multidisciplinary master of science degree that prepares students for careers in media management and marketing, journalism, educational technology, corporate consulting, information science, or public service. By providing a humanist perspective on the role of communications media in today’s culture, CMS puts critical contemporary events in a broader historical context. Just as important, it offers pragmatic responses to the questions that industry and the general public are asking about the place of new media in society.

CMS also recently launched an undergraduate major that has quickly become the largest humanities major at MIT.

The School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences seeks supporters for this rapidly growing initiative—individuals and institutions that understand the tremendous impact of new media and believe that the humanist perspective on the media’s role in society is critically important. One crucial need is to build the program’s fellowship endowment. Or, donors might also consider directing their gifts to the more general Comparative Media Studies Fund.
