Educational Innovation
To continue to produce extraordinary engineering students, we need to be at the vanguard of engineering education.
As a pioneer in engineering science some 40 years ago, MIT established a fundamental new model for engineering education. The Institute aspires to do so again by enhancing learning in new and exciting ways. These include exposing students to the world of practice, utilizing advanced technology to facilitate learning, and developing new approaches to teaching and learning. Most recently, the School has been innovating in education by creating and participating in a variety of programs, including:
- UPOP (Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Program), a program that introduces sophomores to the realities of engineering practice
- E-CUE, a council on best practices in curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment in undergraduate engineering education within the MIT School of Engineering
- iCampus, research programs that explore new ways to use information technology to enhance learning
- OpenCourseWare, MIT’s initiative to make nearly all of its course materials freely available on the World Wide Web
- The d'Arbeloff Fund for Excellence in Education, resources that support faculty in integrating community service projects into their classes.
