Information Engineering

MIT and its School of Engineering have made numerous contributions to the advancement and spread of information engineering, ranging from the first computer time-sharing program to a light-manipulating system that is expected to eliminate one of the last remaining obstacles to high-speed, all fiber-optic communications networks. Today, information technology is pervasive, touching essentially every aspect of engineering. Researchers in all disciplines are engaged in acquiring, manipulating, maintaining, transforming, and using information. As a result, the School plans to embrace information engineering as a School-based activity anchored in the disciplinary core of electrical engineering and computer science, but affecting essentially all engineering disciplines and activities.
