The seven academic departments and two divisions in the School of Engineering are home to over one-third of the Institute’s total faculty.

Engineering Systems

The School-wide engineering systems initiative seeks to advance both knowledge and capabilities across a broad array of areas within the MIT School of Engineering.

Creating an engineering system is a complex task that requires an understanding of basic technologies as well as the ability to design, manufacture, and operate cost-effective and socially responsible products and services that meet basic human needs. These include electrical systems, water distribution systems, communication systems, transportation systems, and modern manufacturing systems.

The creation of engineering systems, therefore, calls for a holistic engineer—someone steeped in technology but also fluent in many “languages,” including the languages of design, management, economics, and the social sciences. By bringing these concerns into the engineering sciences, engineers can solve the complex problems we face in improving our world.
