Nearly 60 percent of all undergraduates with declared majors at MIT, and over 45 percent of all graduate students, are in the School of Engineering.

Bioengineering

Encompassing the majority of departments and divisions within the MIT School of Engineering, and in conjunction with the MIT School of Science, the bioengineering initiative seeks to advance our knowledge and capabilities across a broad array of areas. Collaboration with the Broad Institute, the Center for Biomedical Innovation (CBI), the Center for Cancer Research, the Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology (CIMIT), the Computational and Systems Biology Initiative (CSBi), the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST), and others also plays a key role.

Education and research programs within the initiative include projects in bio-instruments and bio-materials, computational and systems biology, drug discovery, new strategies in cancer therapy, and many more. By bringing engineering science and practice together with the life sciences, we not only make quantum leaps in our understanding of those sciences, we also develop new technologies for health care, the environment, advanced materials, and many other applications.

Learn more about the scope of the bioengineering initiative, or read an article from the School of Engineering’s e-newsletter, Engineering Our World.

More information about the initiative’s research programs and projects is available through the School’s departments, labs, and centers. You can also view a video highlighting an exciting example of research in bioengineering.
