School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P)

What do the —

have in common?

They share a home in the MIT School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P) and a common belief in the power of design to improve the quality of human lives and the societies we live in. At SA+P, we know that outstanding design calls upon a deep understanding of the problem, practical knowledge of how to respond, and the ability to unite both in the search for a solution.

SA+P is unique among our peers. Across disciplines, labs, centers, and departments, we embrace a great range of concerns. We certify students to teach math and science in Massachusetts through the Scheller Teacher Education Program. We teach creative problem-solving through the Visual Arts Program. We work with community organizers and community groups to improve the lives of those least served by our society at the Community Innovators Lab (CoIL). And, we welcome mid-career professionals as fellows from developing countries who seek to enhance their policy-making and planning skills in the Special Program for Urban and Regional Studies (SPURS).

In SA+P, there is a strong connection between education, research, practice, and application. We teach undergraduates about urbanism in the new course CityScope with a hands-on, cross-disciplinary, systems approach. We partner with the U.S. Geological Survey to test new ways to bring science into environmental decision-making through the MIT-USGS Science Impact Collaborative (MUSIC). We link housing and community interests in architecture and planning to promote affordable, sustainable, and equitable housing in programs like the Special Interest Group in Urban Settlement (SIGUS).

SA+P has rich collaborations across the Institute. Consider the MIT Design Lab: where architecture, engineering, art, and urban planning leverage scientific and emerging technologies to discover new solutions to the problems of social and economic importance—like designing a smarter car in a better urban transportation system, for instance.

SA+P relies on gifts to sustain our ability to pursue the highest standards of design. To do this, we invest in our core resources: the people, our learning environment, the curriculum, and our academic and research units. A gift of unrestricted support to the Dean’s Innovation Fund supports all four.

Dean’s Innovation Fund

The Dean’s Innovation Fund is a vital source of unrestricted financial support for all areas of SA+P. For example, past gifts to the Dean’s Innovation Fund have helped —

Whether you give only to the Dean’s Innovation Fund, or designate a part of your annual or reunion gift to the Dean’s Innovation Fund, your gift makes an impact. Your gift gives the dean the ability to meet needs as they arise, and has the power to transform an idea into action.

The Dean’s Circle

Unrestricted gifts to the School of Architecture and Planning are recognized through membership in the Dean’s Circle. When you join the Dean’s Circle, with an annual contribution of $1,200 or more, you make a difference by helping us make a difference. You join a select group of alumni and friends who know that each gift ignites the spirit and energy of invention and creativity across the School.

All Dean’s Circle donors will be recognized annually in the School newsletter, PLAN, and in the Annual Report of the MIT Alumni Association, and will receive MIT Alumni Fund credit for their gift.

Unrestricted support to a specific department, center, or lab within the School of Architecture and Planning allows each program to flexibly respond to opportunities and projects immediately in their area. You may wish to search or browse for other specific giving opportunities within SA+P, or make a gift today by using our secure online giving form.

If you wish to speak to someone about a special gift in support of the School of Architecture and Planning, please contact Tia Tilson, assistant dean for resource development, at ttilson@mit.edu or 617.253.8896.
