The new building designed by Fuhmiko Maki uses 150,000 linear feet of 3/4” aluminum pipe to create a sun screen on its exterior.

Renewing place

Investing in the physical environment

As architects and planners know, when a space feels right, people are more productive. Well-designed communities invite communication, connection, and participation. To inspire more collaboration, cross-disciplinary activity, and creativity, over the next few years, the School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P) community will be united in two campus locations—not the six currently occupied by the School. Three key projects are the centerpiece of this physical renewal: completion of the new Media Lab; moving the MIT Center for Real Estate into Building 9, just off Lobby 7; and renewing the Building 9 Learning Environment, home to the Department of Architecture and the Department of Urban Studies and Planning.

Media Lab building

Construction began during the summer of 2007 on the new building designed by Pritzker Prize winner Fuhmiko Maki, located next to the Media Lab in the Wiesner Building. When complete in 2009, SA+P will unite several programs in the complex of these two buildings: all the existing Media Lab activities, the Visual Arts Program, the Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS), the Rita P. and Joseph B. Scheller Teacher Education Program (STEP) and MIT’s Program on Comparative Media Studies. Additionally, this complex will offer new and necessary exhibition spaces for all our students.

New home for MIT Center for Real Estate

As the first program of its kind in the country, MIT Center for Real Estate (MIT/CRE) draws on the extraordinary intellectual horsepower of MIT and SA+P. The only U.S. program to require extensive coursework in urban planning, MIT/CRE prepares mid-career professionals to understand and shape communities as built environments, as well as financial investments. As the 25th anniversary approaches, MIT/CRE is preparing to move from W31 into the heart of the SA+P learning community. Bringing MIT/CRE physically into the School will allow greater interdisciplinary collaborations between students and faculty at the Center, Urban Studies and Planning, and Architecture, and across the Institute as a whole. As these plans develop, naming opportunities will become available.

Building 9 learning communities

When complete, the renovation of Building 9 will create a physical and intellectual bridge between MIT/CRE and the departments of Architecture and Urban Studies and Planning. This revitalized architectural connection will unlock new opportunities for vibrant teaching and interdisciplinary learning. By reallocating the existing space in Building 9, the space crunch in the School will be relieved, with new architecture studios and urban studies and planning classrooms. As these plans develop, naming opportunities will become available.

Unrestricted support to a specific department, center, or lab within the School of Architecture and Planning allows each program to flexibly respond to opportunities and projects immediately in its area.
