This has been a year for taking stock, for revisiting core values and reshaping goals for the future. The economic downturn has imposed serious burdens on every community. Yet within the MIT community, it has also tapped forces that give me great hope: increased civic responsibility and a surge of fresh commitment to tackling the world’s great challenges.
I want to thank each of you for continuing to support MIT during an unsettled time. As this Annual Report shows, your generosity has been remarkable. This year, the Parents Fund surpassed the $1 million mark, a first in MIT history. Three reunion classes set new records for reunion gifts. And in a development that holds great promise for the future, fully 65% of the Class of 2009 contributed to the Senior Gift—a new record for senior class participation.
Although we measure and celebrate these group achievements, MIT also owes its gratitude to each of you individually. Simply by participating, you demonstrate your confidence in our enduring mission to educate tomorrow’s innovative leaders and thinkers. Each Annual Fund gift supports our highest priorities, including the Campaign for Students and the unrestricted funds that give us the nimbleness and strength to seize new opportunities and address changes unforeseen.
As we design more efficient and effective ways to support our mission of research and education, perseverance and optimism will be our best guides—and you have shown both. Thank you for your steadfast loyalty and undaunted enthusiasm.
Sincerely,
Susan Hockfield
President, MIT
